Nowadays, more and more people are starting to consume organic products to approach a healthier life, as they are aware of the large number of chemical products, many of which are toxic, contained in any food we eat and buy at the supermarket.

PVC elements are not spared as they are very toxic when produced and when burned.

This is why bioconstruction arises, which aims to create healthy and comfortable homes that become our allies.

Bio-construction as such is nothing new, our forefathers used to live in ecological homes, although in most cases the advances and comforts we can enjoy today were not provided.

Until then, houses were built in an artisanal way with materials provided by nature itself such as wood or stone and they managed to provide sufficient housing for their occupants even though they were built with these materials, many of them have succeeded in us in good condition .

The Industrial Revolution led us to today’s construction, to that mass of iron and cement.

Should we give up a healthy and natural habitat for the sake of a modern home adapted to today’s needs?

Certainly not. An ecological home can have the same advancements as conventional ones and with some advantages, in addition to healthier materials.

The advantages are mainly focused on energy saving (for this we apply bioclimatic), which leads to a low impact on the environment of our home and reduces the time of home maintenance, as we said before for a large energy saving, which is observed out of our pocket.

What should we consider in the green building?

To start a bioconstruction project, several factors must be considered, the first of which is the recommendation to hire a professional in this field as it will save us a lot of headaches.

Unfortunately, conventional architects on this topic know little about eco-architecture, so we have to look for an expert, these are few, but they exist all over the international territory and we can find one.

The second factor is the geobiological study of the land where the house will be built.

In this study, possible geophysical changes need to be detailed, thus we will be able to avoid or mitigate possible geophysical changes that may interfere in the future, eg geological faults, radon gas emissions, mobile phone stations, water tables where water currents flow, electromagnetic fields caused by power lines, etc.

Once the terrain has been analyzed and the study of the geographical, cultural and climatic characteristics of the area has been completed, the project has been carried out by adapting it to the real needs of the future owners.

Materials

To start the structure of the building we can choose from several materials such as ceramic blocks and brick, stone, earth and wood, this can be solid or in panels.

The choice of wood will depend on the model that is made based on the materials that can be found in the area.

In the case of insulation, very important in bio construction, natural materials are used in most constructions such as plant fibers (hemp, wood, linen, coconut fiber, cotton and straw), cellulose and cork.

Cork is most commonly used in this sector, although cellulose and wood fibers are giving way, which seems quite durable.

The walls, interior or exterior, can be made of lime mortar, natural plaster or clay. Both plasters and mortars are easy to find and apply.

In the case of beams, doors and windows should be made of wood treated with natural products and of course wood from controlled cuts. For this, the best thing is that they are of forest certification.

Other natural materials applicable to the green building are exterior paints and varnishes. Furthermore, they should breathe and not emit toxic gases, as synthetic dyes prevent sweating.

Inspiration in a building is very important as if they do not have adequate sweating, condensation and humidity problems start, causing all the adjacent problems.

On the other hand, at the time of electrical installation, we need to consider the importance of having a good ground connection, a spike-shaped installation and not placing electrical cables at the head of the beds to avoid the electric field.

Impact of materials used in the construction of buildings

In bio-construction, nature prevails and therefore a lower environmental impact, this environmental impact does not begin when the building is already built or during operation, but rather this impact is placed in all its phases: extraction, transportation, treatment, commissioning, operation and end of life and disposal.

And I am only mentioning the impact of materials produced both on the environment and on human health (pathologies and occupational diseases).

The aforementioned technological development has made it possible to improve the technical characteristics of the materials, however, it is “paid” with biological qualities and environmental safety.

That is, with the advent of new building materials, new problems have emerged with them, such as high environmental costs, high radioactivity, toxicity, lack of sweating, interference from natural electrical and magnetic fields, etc. All this results in a kind of anti-ecological construction, uncomfortable and unhealthy.

Therefore bioconstruction should grow and do it exponentially, using natural materials as mentioned above and using some of the most suitable construction techniques and taking into account:

  • Impact on the environment during the life cycle.
  • Effects on human health.
  • Energy balance during its life cycle.
  • Social benefits.
